In-situ testing — common questions

What is in-situ testing?

Measuring the soil's strength and behaviour right where it sits, instead of only in a lab. SPT, DCPT and vane shear each read how much the ground resists; a Shelby tube pulls an undisturbed sample for lab testing.

What is a Standard Penetration Test (SPT)?

A standardized test where a split-spoon sampler is driven into the soil and the blow count (the N-value) is recorded — a quick, comparable measure of soil density and strength your engineer uses for foundation design.

When do you use a Shelby tube?

In soft or sensitive soils — like the clays common across the valley — when your lab needs an intact, undisturbed sample to test strength and consolidation.
