Auger drilling — common questions

What is auger drilling used for?
Auger drilling bores a clean hole with a rotating screw and no drilling fluid — it's the standard method for geotechnical soil investigations, environmental sampling, and foundation and slope work. We run solid- or hollow-stem augers depending on the ground and the depth you need.
How deep can auger drilling go?
It depends on the soil, but hollow-stem auger drilling commonly reaches 20–30 m in the soft-to-firm ground across the Fraser Valley before refusal on dense till or gravel. We'll tell you what's realistic for your site on the scoping call.
What's the difference between solid-stem and hollow-stem augers?
A solid-stem auger is faster and tidier in stable ground. A hollow-stem auger lets us sample and install through the centre of the augers without pulling the string — which is what most geotechnical and monitoring-well work needs.
